bio

Once upon a time...
when I was 12 I created my first magic act -
for an audience of one.
Nothing was digital in those days.
There was no term for the "wet darkroom" - all darkrooms were wet.
But under that safelight, submerged in the developer tray,
was the moment that changed everything:
my photograph appeared on that blank paper.
It wasn't as if by magic - for me it was real magic.

Theater captured my whimsy in College.
Even as a young Director I would find ways to incorporate photography:
as projections on the stage and as headshots of my own cast and crew.
In 2008 I began to shoot Broadway shows.
By then I had joined the Directors Guild, the Writers Guild,
and the Professional Photographers of America.
But I was always a Photographer - who just happens to be a Director.

I bring the same sense of theatricality to every portrait I shoot.
The subject needs to do more than just stand there and pose.
She or he needs to tell a story with their eyes.
And this basic concept informs every photograph I make.
